SmartPower: plant monitoring from USP&E

Detailed performance figures for plant engineers and managers, built by the team that operates power stations.

What SmartPower is

SmartPower is USP&E’s own software for power plant monitoring. It gives engineers and managers detailed performance figures for the plant in front of them, so they can see how units are running and decide what to do next.

Because USP&E operates stations as well as building them, the monitoring sits alongside the crews who run them.

How a plant uses it

  1. A typical set-up: connect the plant’s units and key measurements to SmartPower, so performance figures reach one screen.
  2. Link work orders and spares through the UpKeep CMMS, so every repair has a record.
  3. Review trends with the operating team, and act on early warnings before they turn into outages.
  4. Feed what you learn back into maintenance plans and spare parts holdings.

What it has delivered

SmartPower has supported a 26% reduction in downtime, as published for USP&E data centre work.

The figure comes from published USP&E data centre material. Read how we explain it on the SmartPower downtime page.

The digital twin

At Africa Energy Forum 2026 in Cape Town, USP&E unveiled an AI digital twin: a live model of an operating plant built from the USP&E African fleet. It extends SmartPower from reporting what happened to testing what might happen.

Where it fits

  • Plants that USP&E built and now operates.
  • Stations that need a monitoring layer after EPC hand-over: see digital O&M after EPC handover.
  • Fleets with several sites that want one view of performance.
