SmartPower GT Crane Lift Plan
Your gas turbine package has crossed oceans and borders, and now it sits on a trailer beside the foundation. The final few metres depend on a crane, a lift plan and ground that can carry the outriggers, and that is where many schedules break.
If the lift plan is vague, the risk is a crane too small for the radius, ground that cannot bear the load or a wind window missed while everyone waits. Days of delay follow, crane hire and standby costs pile up and the commissioning crew sits idle.
USP&E as Your Guide From Yard to Foundation
We know how much is riding on the day the package finally lifts. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Build the Lift Plan During Package Planning
Get the exact weights of your gas turbine generators package, centres of gravity and lifting points from the supplier before shipping, not on arrival. Use them to choose your crane capacity, boom length and radius with margin, and draw the crane position, trailer approach and swing path on the site plan. Heavy lifts may need a tandem lift or a jacking and skidding system instead of a single crane.
Check ground-bearing pressure under the outriggers and along your access route. Soft ground, buried services and new backfill near foundations are common problems. Mats, compacted pads or piled crane bases may be needed, and they take time to prepare, so plan them weeks ahead.
Prepare Rigging, Weather Windows and People
Rigging drawings should show slings, shackles, spreader beams and their certified ratings. Inspect all your rigging before the lift and keep certificates on site. Set your wind speed limits from the crane manufacturer’s data and watch forecasts so the lift happens in a safe window, with a fallback date already booked.
Name your lift supervisor, crane operator, signaller and tag-line crew, and run a toolbox talk before every critical lift. Natural gas engines/stations and auxiliary skids on the same site need their own lift plans, scheduled so they never steal crane time from the main package during a weather delay.
Bridge Units and Larger Modules
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B arrives as heavy modules that need careful handling. Ask for lifting drawings, weights and preservation instructions with the records and inspection scope, and compare used/new gas turbines on how easily your site can receive them.
When sites plan AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute, keep your crane corridors and laydown areas free for larger modules. The planning reference is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. One contractor carrying hyperscale EPC/O&M can link logistics, lifts and commissioning in one schedule.
Global Offices Behind Your Power Logistics Programme
Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your GT spares and logistics programme in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.
When rotating spares, hot-section kits and containerised equipment must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
For a heavy-lift programme, that means the logistics engineers who plan your route and crane position also follow the package from port to pad, and one person signs off the lift plan, rigging certificates and weather window. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 85+ countries guided, 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
Proof from Recent Power Logistics Projects
You need proof that USP&E can move and place heavy power equipment. These projects show remote supply, turbine delivery and plant recovery done properly.
- USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
- NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.
- Mining O&M recovery, Mali: USP&E took over a 100+ MW plant of 15 Cat CM32 engines left in critical condition, restored availability to about 95% and cut maintenance and repair cost per engine by 66%. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share package data, site layout and your delivery window. 2. Get a lift plan with crane, rigging and ground checks plus EPC and O&M scope. 3. Lift in a safe window, set the package and hand over to commissioning.
- Map package identity, lift charts, ground-bearing pressures, weather windows, and which roles own the release clock after pad arrival.
- Compare remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, and natural gas engines/stations against crane and pad needs.
- Review equipment at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Extend logistics design for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Freeze lift justifications, attach rigging evidence, link pads and weather windows, and rehearse landing with named roles.
- Complete training, SLA clocks, and logistics rehearsals before declaring the crane lift path ready.

FAQ: SmartPower GT Crane Lift Plan
Why plan crane lifts together with the turbine package?
USP&E plans lifts with the package because crane size, ground preparation and rigging all depend on weights, lifting points and site layout. Leaving the plan until arrival risks the wrong crane, soft ground or missed weather windows, which delays installation and adds crane standby costs.
What ground checks does a turbine lift need?
USP&E checks ground-bearing capacity under crane outriggers and along the access route, looking for soft ground, buried services and fresh backfill near foundations. Where capacity is short, mats, compacted pads or piled crane bases are prepared in advance so the lift day is not lost.
Does a remanufactured GE Frame 6B need special lift care?
USP&E treats a remanufactured GE Frame 6B as a set of heavy, sensitive modules. Lifting drawings, weights, centres of gravity and preservation instructions are reviewed with the inspection scope, and rigging is chosen so the unit is lifted only at its designed points.
Where are USP&E offices that support logistics programmes?
USP&E anchors logistics programmes in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi supports China supply chain, so your package is tracked from factory to foundation.
Has USP&E delivered heavy equipment to remote sites before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 turbines delivered to NEOM and a Mali plant recovery covering 15 Cat CM32 engines.
Is USP&E a broker for turbine logistics?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that supplies, ships, installs, commissions and operates power plants, so the team planning your lift is accountable for the package landing safely on its foundation and running afterwards.
How fast can USP&E respond to a lift planning request?
USP&E can begin as soon as you share package weights, lifting points, site layout and the delivery window. A first crane and ground assessment follows quickly, and the final plan depends on crane availability, ground preparation and the weather patterns at your site.
What usually fails a crane lift handover?
USP&E sees lift handovers fail on missing weights or lifting drawings, unchecked ground, expired rigging certificates and unclear roles. A single signed lift plan, inspected rigging and a named lift supervisor prevent most of these problems before the crane arrives on site.
Land Your Package Safely and on Time
Get the lift plan right and your turbine package moves from trailer to foundation in one safe, scheduled window. Get it wrong and the crane waits on soft ground while costs mount. USP&E will help you plan every lift properly.
