Smart Power GT Cargo Insurance Pack

You ship gas turbine packages across oceans, through ports and over long roads, with several lifts along the way. Every one of those moments carries risk, and the policy you bought may not respond to the loss that actually happens.

If cargo insurance is an afterthought, a damaged unit can leave you arguing about who insured which leg, whether the loss is covered and what condition the unit was in before it left. That means delays, lost value, stranded equipment and penalties while your project waits for a replacement.

USP&E as Your Guide to Cargo Insurance That Responds

We understand how exposed you feel when a high-value unit is out of sight on a ship or trailer. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations and supplied about 25 000 MW, and our 400+ engineers and project managers have moved power plants across borders and continents. We work under ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

Map Risk Transfer for Every Leg

Start with your contract. Map the Incoterm risk-transfer points for every leg of the journey, from factory or storage yard to foundation, and confirm who must insure each one. Gaps often appear at ports, in storage and during lifts, where responsibility changes hands without anyone noticing until a loss forces the question and your project is already waiting.

Check that your cover follows the cargo through every stage, including temporary storage, transhipment and final placement on the foundation. Where your contract leaves a gap, close it with your own cover or by agreement with the other party, before the unit leaves.

Share the map with your logistics team, freight forwarders and carriers, so everyone knows who is responsible at each handover and who must report damage.

Understand What the Policy Actually Covers

Review your policy basis, exclusions, valuation and how storage and lifting are treated. Some policies exclude damage from inadequate packing or preservation, and others limit cover during long storage. Make sure the insured value reflects replacement cost and the time a replacement would take.

Tie every prevention measure to the conditions of cover: lashing plans, lift plans, preservation logs and route surveys. Insurers expect these, and your claim can fail if the conditions were not met, even when the damage itself is clearly covered. Keep the evidence with your shipment file, ready to share the same day a loss is reported.

Agree with your insurer in advance who appoints surveyors and how quickly they can attend at each port.

Be Ready to Claim Before Anything Goes Wrong

Assemble departure condition evidence for each of your units: photographs, inspection reports, preservation records and test results. Whether the cargo is a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, gas turbine generators or natural gas engines/stations, evidence of condition at departure is what proves damage happened in transit.

Agree arrival inspection and notice routines with your receivers, since claims can fail on late notice. Reuse the pack for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1 blocks, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz with capacity slots from 2028, and for AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute under hyperscale EPC/O&M.

Global Offices Behind Your Power Logistics Programme

Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your GT spares and logistics programme in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.

When rotating spares, hot-section kits and containerised equipment must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.

For your power logistics programme and GT spares plan, Johannesburg and Cape Town teams can prepare insurance packs and arrival inspections with your logistics partners, while turbine packages, spares and gensets travel with complete condition records. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 85+ countries guided, 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

FAQ: Smart Power GT Cargo Insurance Pack

Why do gas turbine shipments need a cargo insurance pack?

USP&E prepares cargo insurance packs because turbine packages cross oceans, ports and roads with several lifts, and a policy bought as an afterthought may not respond. The pack maps who insures each leg, what the cover includes and what evidence a claim will need.

How do Incoterms affect cargo insurance for turbines?

USP&E maps Incoterm risk-transfer points for every leg, because they decide who bears loss and who must insure at each stage. Gaps often appear at ports, in storage and during lifts, so the map shows where extra cover or agreement is needed before shipment.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support power logistics?

USP&E anchors power logistics in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where project controls, engineering and commissioning teams sit close to African ports and sites. London supports structuring and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville link you to US supply, and Wuxi covers China sourcing.

Has USP&E delivered and moved power plant before?

USP&E has supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include a stranded 32 MW MAN plant moved across four countries to Iraq and a Mali O&M recovery reaching about 95% availability.

Is USP&E a broker for power equipment logistics?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that supplies, ships, installs, commissions and operates power plants, so the team preparing your insurance pack is also accountable when the unit reaches its foundation and runs.

How fast can USP&E respond to a cargo insurance review?

USP&E can review your contracts, shipping plans and policies as soon as you share them. Engineers and logistics staff map risk transfer and flag gaps first, then build the evidence checklist, and the timeline depends on your shipping schedule and policy documents.

What departure evidence supports a cargo claim?

USP&E collects photographs, inspection reports, preservation records and test results for each unit before it leaves. That evidence proves the condition at departure, so damage found on arrival can be shown to have happened in transit rather than before shipment.

Why does notice timing matter for cargo claims?

USP&E agrees arrival inspection and notice routines in advance, because many policies require prompt notice of damage. Late notice can weaken or defeat a claim, so inspectors know what to check, whom to call and how quickly to report findings.

Ship With Cover That Responds

Get your cargo insurance pack right and a transit loss becomes a claim that pays, not a dispute that drags. Get it wrong and your project carries the cost. USP&E will help you map, cover and evidence every shipment, from the factory gate to your foundation.
