SmartPower GT Crate Marking and Packing List

Your gas turbine does not arrive as one package. It comes as skids, crates, loose pipe, cable drums and boxes of small parts, often from several factories. If those packages are not clearly marked and tied to one packing list, you will not know what has arrived, what is missing or where a critical part is sitting.

Unmarked or mismatched crates cause customs queries, lost parts in the laydown yard and installation crews standing idle while someone opens boxes looking for a gasket set. Every hour spent searching is an hour added to your schedule and your cost.

USP&E Helps You Mark GT Crates and Control the Packing List

We know crate marking looks like a clerical job, until the part you need is in an unlabelled box at the back of the yard. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers set numbering systems, crate marking rules and packing list controls for gas turbine shipments from factory to foundation. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

The goal is simple: anyone at the port, the laydown yard or the foundation should be able to read a crate, find it on the packing list and know what is inside and where it goes.

Agree One Numbering System Before Packing

Agree one numbering system for your crates, skids and loose parts with every supplier before packing starts. Turbine, generator, auxiliary and balance-of-plant suppliers each have their own habits, and mixed systems are a main reason parts go missing.

Make each package number carry useful meaning for you, such as the project, the system and the destination area, so your yard team can sort crates without opening them. Keep the system simple enough that it is used correctly on every crate, by every packer.

Put the numbering rules in your purchase orders and shipping instructions. A rule that lives only in an email is often forgotten by the packer on the factory floor.

Mark Every Crate and Tie It to the List

Mark every package with its number, gross weight, dimensions, centre of gravity, lift points and handling symbols such as this way up, keep dry and do not stack. Your riggers and crane operators rely on those marks to lift safely, so they must be accurate and visible on more than one side.

Build a packing list that ties each package number to its contents, the tag or drawing numbers inside and the destination area on site. Use the same list for your customs agent, carriers and receiving site, so every party works from the same data.

Photograph each crate’s contents before it is closed and file the photos against the package number. When a part you need seems missing, the photo often settles the question in minutes instead of weeks of claims.

Check at Every Stop and Record Every Gap

Check your crates against the packing list at the port, at the laydown yard and again before installation. Each check catches damage or shortages while you still have time to replace parts without stopping your erection crew.

Record your shortages, damage and substitutions in one register with a named person and a due date for each item. Feed the register to your purchasing team so replacement parts are ordered early, not when the crew reaches the gap.

Good marking pays off on every move. Shipments of gas turbine generators, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines and natural gas engines/stations all arrive as many packages, and multi-unit deliveries of AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute to hyperscale EPC/O&M campuses, including the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA, will rely on the same crate numbering and packing list control.

USP&E Teams Behind Your Power Logistics Site

Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your GT spares and logistics programme from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.

Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for rotating spares, hot-section kits and containerised equipment; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.

For GT crate marking and packing lists, Johannesburg and Cape Town logistics engineers can agree numbering rules with your suppliers and check crates at African ports and laydown yards. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

USP&E Track Record for Power Logistics

You want proof that USP&E has moved multi-package power equipment across borders and onto remote sites intact. These projects show that record.

  • USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
  • MAN redeployment, Iraq: USP&E moved a stranded 32 MW MAN plant, plus two surplus MAN generators, across four countries to an industrial buyer facing 12 to 18 month lead times for new engines. Read the case study.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied three zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines as the single technical and commercial interface, and the client reported savings of over $10 million. Read the case study.

FAQ: SmartPower GT Crate Marking and Packing List

Why does crate numbering matter for gas turbine shipments?

USP&E sees a single numbering system as the base of every smooth gas turbine delivery. Your turbine arrives as many skids, crates and loose parts from several suppliers. One clear system lets the port, yard and erection crew find each package without opening crates or guessing.

What should be marked on each crate?

USP&E marks every package with its number, gross weight, dimensions, centre of gravity, lift points and handling symbols. You need those marks visible on more than one side, because riggers, crane operators and yard staff rely on them to lift, store and stack each crate safely.

What makes a good packing list?

USP&E builds packing lists that tie each package number to its contents, tag or drawing numbers and destination area on site. Your customs agent, carriers and receiving team should all use the same list, so nobody works from an older version or a separate spreadsheet.

Why photograph crate contents before closing?

USP&E photographs crate contents before closing because the photo settles most missing-part questions quickly. You can show the supplier, carrier or insurer exactly what was packed. Without photos, a shortage claim can take weeks while your erection crew waits for a replacement part.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support power logistics?

USP&E plans power logistics from Johannesburg and Cape Town, close to African ports and remote sites. Colorado Springs and Knoxville handle US receiving and project controls, London covers contracts and finance, and Wuxi checks packing at China factories before crates leave for export.

Has USP&E delivered multi-package power projects before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. USP&E also supplied zero-hour gas turbines at NEOM as the single technical and commercial interface. Both are public case studies you can read before you appoint anyone.

Is USP&E a broker for logistics services?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E ships, installs and operates power plants with its own engineers and project managers, so the people who set your crate numbering also receive the packages on site, track every shortage and stay accountable until the plant is running.

How quickly can USP&E set up crate marking rules?

USP&E can start drafting numbering rules and marking standards as soon as you share supplier lists and purchase orders under NDA. Engineers focus first on suppliers packing soonest, then issue the full packing list template, with timing set by factory dates and how many suppliers are involved.

Know What Is in Every Crate

Get crate marking right and every package is found, checked and lifted without delay from port to foundation. Get it wrong and the first sign is a crew waiting while someone searches the yard for a missing part. USP&E will help you number, mark and check with confidence.
