Getting more out of Diesel Power Generators is a struggle that anyone in the power industry is aware of. The growing demand of the global population and economy are straining the abilities of power companies. In order to meet this demand either new Diesel Power Generators need to be purchased, adding a monetary strain to companies, or the Diesel Power Generators that are in use need to become more efficient. A way to increase the efficiency of Diesel Power Generators is to turn the excess heat from their exhausts into power. Today, this can be done thanks to new technology from GE Power & Water and USP&E. The GE Clean Cycle is a breakthrough product with the ability to turn the once wasted exhaust heat into an additional power source for Diesel Power Generators.
A Boon to Diesel Power Generators
The essential component of the GE Clean Cycle’s ability to turn heat into power and get more from reciprocating engines is its implementation of the Organic Rankine Cycle. The first stage of this cycle begins when the organic fluid in the Clean Cycle is pumped through multiple heat exchangers where the fluid is exposed the the exhaust heat from the Diesel Power Generators. After the fluid is heated to 250 F, it expands across a turbine causing a difference in pressure, allowing the turbine to spin. The spinning turbine is the source of additional power, but the process doesn’t stop there. The turbine is integrated into a power module that allows this additional power to be harnessed and used in addition to the power of Diesel Power Generators. The vapor from the evaporated organic fluid then condenses and is used again in the cycle. No additional fuel is needed to power the GE Clean Cycle.
The additional power produced from the GE Clean Cycle is, on average, an additional 125 kW. With this additional power, Diesel Power Generators can be run at full capacity and the 125 kW from the GE Clean Cycle will be added on top of what is already being produced, or Diesel Power Generators can be turned down and the 125 kW can be used to meet the specified power needs. This versatility, as well as the GE Clean Cycle’s ability to be connected to multiple Diesel Power Generators, or multiple GE Clean Cycle’s to one generator prove to be well worth the investment.
