SmartPower: How the Power Plant Software System Fits Together

Your plant data is scattered: some in the control room, some in spreadsheets, some in technicians’ notebooks. When a unit trips, nobody can see the full history quickly, and the same faults keep coming back.

You need one system that connects plant data, maintenance records and reporting, from a single site to a fleet of plants.

A System Designed Around O&M

We designed SmartPower around how our own operators work. USP&E deploys it on plants we run and on client plants that want the same visibility. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

The Building Blocks

SmartPower starts at the plant controls, reading data from engine and turbine controllers, generator protection, switchgear and auxiliary systems. A site gateway gathers that data and sends it securely to the platform, where it is stored, analysed and displayed. Dashboards show live status, trends and key measures for each unit and for the plant as a whole.

A link to CMMS tools turns findings into work orders, so maintenance history and live performance sit side by side.

From One Site to a Fleet

The same structure works for one plant or many. Multi-site dashboards let owners compare units across locations, spot common faults and share spares between sites. That is valuable for mining groups, utilities and rental fleets running plants in several countries.

Fleet visibility also helps logistics: knowing which parts are wearing where lets spares be positioned before they are needed, including for plants supported by logistics for used diesel genset deliveries.

Security and Reliability

Plant networks must stay safe. SmartPower is deployed with segregation between control systems and external connections, role-based access and secure data transfer. Basic operational technology security practices are part of every deployment plan.

If connectivity drops, site data is buffered and sent when the link returns, so records stay complete in remote locations.

USP&E Offices Deploying SmartPower

For the SmartPower system, the Johannesburg team (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) runs commercial and engineering leadership while Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock) supports field crews and shipping. Ask our Johannesburg or Knoxville team for a SmartPower architecture review for your plant or fleet. Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) cover US assets and buyers, London (162-168 Regent Street) covers finance-facing work, and Wuxi (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) covers fabrication. USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. Behind that footprint sit 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified management systems.

Operating Experience Behind SmartPower

You want software shaped by real plants. These projects informed it.

  • Barrick Gold, Mali: USP&E refurbished and supported a 104 MW mining power station. Read the case study.
  • Resolute Mining, Syama, Mali: USP&E installed and operated a 30 MW Caterpillar power station from 2007 to 2010. Read the case study.
  • USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers.

Your Plan

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your plant controls and data sources. 2. Agree a SmartPower architecture. 3. Connect, train your team and start using the dashboards.

  1. List controllers and data sources at each site.
  2. Design the gateway and network segregation.
  3. Connect data and configure dashboards.
  4. Link alerts and work orders to CMMS.
  5. Train operators and review monthly.

FAQ: SmartPower power plant software

How is the SmartPower system structured?

USP&E’s SmartPower reads data from plant controllers and protection systems, gathers it through a site gateway and sends it securely to a platform for storage, analysis and dashboards. A CMMS link turns findings into planned maintenance work orders.

Can SmartPower monitor several plants?

Yes. USP&E deploys SmartPower for single plants or fleets, with multi-site dashboards that compare units across locations, highlight common faults and support sharing of spares between sites.

How does SmartPower handle network security?

USP&E deploys SmartPower with segregation between control systems and external connections, role-based access and secure data transfer. Operational technology security practices are included in every deployment plan.

What happens if the internet link fails?

USP&E configures site gateways to buffer data during connectivity loss and send it when the link returns. Records stay complete even at remote plants with unreliable communications.

Is USP&E a software broker?

No. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker. SmartPower supports the plants we build and operate, and our O&M teams use it every day.

Which plants can use SmartPower?

USP&E deploys SmartPower on diesel, HFO and gas engine plants, gas turbine stations and hybrid plants, provided the controls can share operating data. A site survey confirms what can be connected.

Which offices support SmartPower deployments?

USP&E supports SmartPower from Johannesburg and Cape Town, Colorado Springs and Knoxville, London and Wuxi, with site work carried out by the O&M team closest to the plant.

How long does a SmartPower deployment take?

USP&E plans each deployment after reviewing your controls and network. An engineer will give you a timeline once the number of units, data sources and connectivity options are known.

Take the Next Step With USP&E

Get the SmartPower system right and your site gains power you can plan around. Get it wrong and you carry the outage, the penalty and the rework. Start with a conversation with USP&E, call +27 10 822 2324 or write to info@uspeglobal.com. Live equipment is listed on the inventory page.
